The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called on governors in Nigeria’s South-West region to seize the momentum created by the United Nations’ recent recognition of the Western Nigeria Security Network, Amotekun, to fully equip the regional security outfit for optimal performance.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Jare Ajayi, described the recognition as a historic milestone and a morale booster for community-based security initiatives across the country.
Ajayi stated, “The United Nations’ endorsement of Amotekun is unprecedented in this part of the world. It affirms the credibility of the concept and the resilience of those who pioneered and continue to sustain it.
“This global recognition must now be backed by action from the South-West governors to properly equip Amotekun.”
He noted that the recognition came with an invitation for Amotekun to attend meetings of UN affiliates focused on security and human rights—an opportunity he described as both symbolic and strategic in the global fight against insecurity.
July 7 has also been declared Amotekun Day by the United Nations, further reinforcing the legitimacy and relevance of the initiative.
Afenifere said the recognition was publicly announced last week by the President of the World Peace Organisation, Ambassador Peer Stafsen, who presented a certificate of affiliation to the Ondo State Amotekun Corps Commandant, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, in Akure.
The group further used the occasion to renew its long-standing demand for the creation of state police across Nigeria, arguing that decentralised policing remains the most effective way to tackle growing insecurity and banditry.
In a related development, the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, has urged the Federal Government to improve funding and logistics support for national security agencies.
The monarch made the call while receiving the leadership of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), led by the wife of the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Elizabeth Egbetokun, at his Iga Idunganran Palace.
Oba Akiolu also emphasised the importance of grassroots intelligence and community cooperation, advising Nigerians to adopt a “see something, say something” approach in support of security agencies.
He commended POWA’s efforts in supporting police officers and urged them to also focus on instilling good morals and discipline in their children while their husbands serve the nation.
Dr. Egbetokun, on her part, lauded the traditional ruler for his long-standing support and said their visit was to pay homage and express appreciation following a successful national conference held by the association in Lagos.
