Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Murtala Muhammed Airport Command, have intercepted a major wildlife trafficking attempt involving over 1,620 endangered birds destined for illegal export to Kuwait.
The Area Controller, Comptroller Michael Awe, confirmed the seizure on Monday in Lagos, describing it as a significant breakthrough in the fight against illicit wildlife trade.
According to Awe, the birds—comprising Ringneck Parakeets and Canaries—were discovered by vigilant customs officers at the airport’s cargo control post on July 31.
He said the shipment was being transported without the mandatory Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) permit, a clear violation of international and national laws protecting endangered wildlife.
“These live birds are protected species. As a signatory to the CITES treaty, Nigeria is obligated to ensure that international trade in such animals is strictly regulated to avoid endangering their survival,” Awe stated.
He explained that the seizure underscores the command’s zero-tolerance policy on illegal exports, particularly those involving wildlife.
The customs chief disclosed that investigations are underway to identify and arrest those behind the attempted smuggling. He assured the public that the perpetrators would be brought to justice in line with the law.
In line with inter-agency collaboration, the seized birds are to be handed over to the National Parks Service for proper care and rehabilitation.
“This operation aligns with the policy thrust of the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, who also chairs the World Customs Organisation Council, and who has prioritized environmental protection and compliance with international treaties,” Awe added.
Wildlife trafficking remains a growing concern in Nigeria, with experts warning that the illegal trade threatens biodiversity and undermines conservation efforts.
