President Bola Tinubu has approved the implementation of pension increments and a minimum pension guarantee for retired police officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), following protests by the ex-servicemen in Abuja.
The directive was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Tinubu also mandated the immediate rollout of free healthcare for low-income retirees nationwide, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to social welfare and security sector reform.
The President’s decision followed a briefing he received from the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Omolola Oloworaran, who highlighted the long-standing grievances of police retirees and the ongoing efforts to protect pension assets amidst inflationary pressures.
Tinubu expressed concern over the plight of retired police officers, stressing that those who spent their careers safeguarding the country must be allowed to retire with dignity.
“Members of the Police Force who serve and protect the nation deserve to retire with dignity and peace of mind,” Tinubu was quoted as saying.
The PenCom boss also informed the President of new initiatives aimed at expanding the reach of the pension system, including a proposed framework for foreign currency contributions that would allow Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the CPS.
President Tinubu threw his weight behind the proposed reforms, assuring that his administration remains committed to inclusive economic growth and improved welfare for all categories of retirees.
The President’s directive comes days after scores of retired police officers staged a protest in Abuja, demanding improved welfare and the implementation of long-promised pension reforms.
