The Oyo State Government has raised the alarm over a fraudulent message circulating among retirees, urging them to submit personal and banking details for a so-called pension verification exercise.
Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Prof. Salihu Adelabu, in a statement on Friday in Ibadan, described the notice as fake and warned pensioners to disregard it completely.
According to him, the message—demanding photocopies of pension certificates, bank account numbers, and phone contacts—did not originate from the ministry and was clearly designed to defraud unsuspecting retirees.
“We want to make it clear that there is no such ongoing verification exercise,” Adelabu stated. “Our ministry contacts eligible retirees only when it is their turn to receive benefits, and all such communication comes strictly through recognised and credible channels.”
The commissioner advised pensioners to treat any suspicious message with caution and verify its authenticity before taking any action.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to transparency and the welfare of retirees, Adelabu urged members of the public to help curb the spread of false information, stressing that protecting pensioners from fraud was a shared responsibility.
