Former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola, OFR, on Thursday drew a standing ovation as he led a Christian hymn at the launch of a historic book chronicling the roots of Christianity in Abeokuta.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the Baba Adinni of Ogun State and of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta States, was the Chief Launcher of Abeokuta: The Cradle of Christianity in Nigeria, written by the Balogun of Egba Christian Chiefs, Chief Babatunde Joseph Oke.
The ceremony, held at the Henry Townsend Hall within the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, Ake — Nigeria’s first church — attracted top monarchs, clerics, academics and community leaders.
In a symbolic gesture that underscored his reputation for religious tolerance, the devout Muslim stood before the congregation and rendered a Christian hymn, drawing thunderous applause from the audience.
The Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba (Dr.) Michael Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, CFR, Okukenu IV, directed the diplomat to perform the official book presentation, describing him as a true son of Egbaland whose life reflects unity and service.
Other dignitaries at the event included the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Prof. Saka Adelola Matemilola, represented by Prof. Adelekan; the Onijale of Ijale Papa, Oba Michael Ajibola Aderohunmu; Chairman of the occasion, Otunba Dr. S.A.J. Ibikunle; forward writer, Prof. Joel Oyekunle Akinosi; book reviewer, Barr. Sunny Sofolahan; and the Dean of the Cathedral, Very Rev. Omidiji.
The book traces the pioneering role of Abeokuta in spreading Christianity in Nigeria, from the missionary works of Henry Townsend to the rise of Egba Christian leadership in the 19th century.
Paying tribute to the author, Isola said: “This book is more than history; it is a bridge between generations, between faiths, and between legacies.”
For many in attendance, the moment captured Abeokuta’s enduring legacy as a city where faiths meet, history lives, and unity still holds firm.
