Justice Dehinde Dipeolu of the Federal High Court, Lagos, has sentenced a man, Dauda Yakubu, to six months of community service for dealing in illicit drugs.
Yakubu was arrested with 91 grams of cannabis sativa, 900 grams of codeine-based cough syrup, and 38 grams of tramadol tablets.
The convict was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a one-count charge of unlawful dealing in narcotics.
According to the charge sheet, Yakubu committed the offence on June 25, 2025, at the Alaba Rago area of Ojo, Lagos State.
The NDLEA told the court that his actions contravened and were punishable under Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
Yakubu, who pleaded guilty to the charge, begged the court for leniency, saying it was his first offence.
Delivering judgment, Justice Dipeolu said the court had considered his plea for mercy and the quantity of drugs found in his possession, noting that the punishment must serve as a deterrent to others.
She therefore sentenced him to six months of community service to be supervised by the Lagos State Directorate of Community Service.
The court further ordered that the seized drugs be destroyed by the NDLEA in line with legal provisions.
