Agents of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) were on Saturday accused of ballot manipulation after being caught with thumb-printed ballot papers during the Anambra by-election.
The incident occurred at Aguata High School, Ekwulobia, where eyewitnesses alleged that the intercepted materials consisted of multiple ballot sheets already thumb-printed in favour of the party.
A video obtained from the scene showed bundles of ballot papers allegedly being smuggled into the polling unit. In the footage, a voice was heard saying:
> “This is what we discovered: ballot papers already thumb-printed. They were trying to smuggle it into the ballot box before our party agent raised the alarm. On getting there, we saw two booklets already printed for ADC.”
The discovery sparked outrage among voters and party agents present at the centre, with many accusing the ADC of attempting to subvert the electoral process through ballot stuffing.
Locals said the suspected malpractice was quickly exposed before the ballot papers could be inserted into the box. Security operatives were yet to confirm if any arrests were made as of press time.
The ADC, recently adopted by some opposition figures, has positioned itself as a “rescue mission” party, vowing to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). However, Saturday’s allegations cast a shadow over its credibility.
The party has in recent weeks criticised President Bola Tinubu’s frequent foreign trips, accusing him of neglecting urgent domestic issues. According to its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, Tinubu had embarked on 40 international trips in just 26 months, spending about 181 days outside Nigeria since assuming office.
Meanwhile, calls are mounting on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to thoroughly investigate the alleged ballot stuffing attempt and ensure accountability in the Anambra by-election.
