A former governorship candidate in Zamfara State and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, on Friday narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in Abuja.
Shinkafi, who confirmed the incident, said he was attacked shortly after observing Juma’at prayers while returning home.
According to him, a group of heavily armed, masked men dressed in black intercepted his vehicle and opened fire before fleeing in a black, unmarked Prado Jeep.
The politician, who once contested for the Zamfara governorship seat, described the attack as a clear attempt on his life, linking it to his strong position on insecurity and governance in the North-West region.
In a statement issued through the Patriots for the Advancement of Peace and Social Development, Shinkafi alleged that the plot was designed to silence him.
“This was an unprovoked attempt on my life. I have received several threat calls this week, and I believe they are connected to my stance on insecurity in Zamfara and my call for national peace, unity, and development. But I will not be intimidated,” he declared.
He called on the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to immediately launch an investigation into the incident, arrest the perpetrators, and expose their sponsors.
