It was glamour, culture, and a convergence of Nigeria’s political, traditional, and religious elite on Saturday, as the families of Dr. (Mrs) Yemi Kolapo, Iya Suna of Egbaland, and retired Brigadier General Moshood Jimoh, gave out their children—Faisah Kolapo and Hakeem Jimoh—in marriage.
The colourful Nikkah ceremony, held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library Marquee, Abeokuta, August 23, 2025, attracted dignitaries from across the country, who gathered to witness the solemnisation of the couple’s union.
Leading the roll call of eminent guests were former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo; the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi; the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba (Prof.) Saka Matemilola; and former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.
Other high-profile attendees included Senator Shuaib Salisu; PDP chieftain, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu; Ovation Magazine Publisher, Bashorun Dele Momodu; Senior Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu, Tunde Rahmon; Mrs. Bola Obasanjo; journalist and analyst, Dr. Reuben Abati; Convener of The Alternative Movement, Otunba Segun Showunmi; and former NUJ President, Chris Iziguzor.
The spiritual tone of the event was set by the Chief Imam of Egbaland, Sheikh Saadalat Bamgbola, who led a team of Islamic scholars, including the Mufti of Ilorin, Sheikh Farooq Onikijipa.
The Chief Imam of Gbaguraland, Sheikh (Prof.) Kamaldeen Balogun, delivered the wedding lecture, urging the new couple to embrace patience, loyalty, and mutual understanding.
He cautioned the groom against violence, stressing his duty to provide care and shelter, while advising the bride to remain committed to her husband.
Also delivering goodwill messages, the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, urged the couple to build their marriage on compassion.
“In everything you do in marriage, ask yourself, is this something you will do to someone you truly love? Is it compassionate?” he said.
The father of the groom, Gen. Moshood Jimoh (rtd.), expressed joy and gratitude, while the bride’s mother, Dr. Yemi Kolapo, spoke of pride and emotion.
“I feel super proud that I raised a lovely daughter… my message is for them to live in peace, shut out outsiders, and grow together,” she said.
Former Ogun Governor, Senator Amosun, described the union as blissful, praying that the celebration would be repeated by the couple’s future children.
Chairman of the reception, Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Ishola, likened marriage to “a journey from the ocean of fantasy to the ocean of reality.”
He admonished the couple to nurture their home with respect and affection, warning against abuse and disloyalty.
The occasion was spiced with entertainment from Fuji icon, Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (K1 De Ultimate), who thrilled guests with evergreen tunes, while Nollywood stars including Adebayo Salami, Fathia Balogun, Madam Saje, and Doyin Kukoyi added glamour to the already colourful ceremony.
The event, graced by top politicians, military veterans, media practitioners, Nollywood actors, and religious leaders, reinforced Abeokuta’s reputation as a cultural hub for high-profile celebrations.
