Lafarge Africa Plc has launched EcoCrete, Nigeria’s first low-carbon ready-mix concrete, designed to cut carbon emissions in the construction sector while maintaining top performance.
The product, unveiled in Lagos on Wednesday, promises at least a 20 per cent reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to conventional cement-based concrete. Lafarge said the rollout began with the full conversion of its Abuja Ready-Mix plant to EcoCrete production.
Speaking at the launch, the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lafarge Africa, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, said the innovation demonstrates the company’s resolve to lead Nigeria’s transition to greener construction.
“EcoCrete expands our sustainable solutions portfolio and reinforces our commitment to decarbonising the country’s construction industry. It allows our customers to build better with less,” he said.
He added that the new product builds on the success of Lafarge’s other eco-friendly solutions such as EcoPlanet Unicem and EcoPlanet Elephant cement, introduced in 2024 and 2025 respectively.
Also speaking, the company’s Head of Aggregates and ReadyMix, Derek Williamson, said EcoCrete combines strength, durability, and workability with reduced carbon impact, making it suitable for housing, commercial buildings, bridges, and road projects.
“With EcoCrete, contractors, engineers and architects can meet sustainability goals without compromising performance. It is reliable for both residential and infrastructure projects,” Williamson stressed.
On his part, the Head of Innovation and New Product Development, Emmanuel Ilaboya, described the launch as a milestone in the fight against climate change.
“EcoCrete is a climate-smart innovation developed through extensive research. It provides a scalable alternative that lowers carbon emissions while supporting sustainable development in Nigeria,” he noted.
Lafarge Africa, a subsidiary of Holcim Group, said the launch underscores its strategy of shaping the country’s construction landscape with eco-friendly solutions aligned with global climate goals.
With cement plants in Ogun, Gombe, and Cross River States, and ready-mix operations in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, Lafarge currently has an installed cement production capacity of 10.5 million tonnes per annum.
The company reaffirmed its pledge to continue driving innovations that reduce environmental impact while supporting Nigeria’s urbanisation and economic growth.
