The Chaplain of the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, and Pastor of Mount Zion Christian Faith Assembly, Tony Ogbenor, has urged Christians to focus on their divine purpose rather than the pursuit of material wealth.
Ogbenor gave the charge during the 27th Annual August Reunion and Retreat Programme of the church, held at the hospital chapel in Aro, Abeokuta.
This year’s event, which had the theme “The Planting of the Lord,” drew participants from across Nigeria, the West African sub-region, as well as members joining online from Europe and America.
Speaking with PLATFORM TIMES, the cleric explained that the three-day retreat was designed to remind believers that they are God’s planting, created for a purpose beyond earthly pursuits.
“Jesus did not die because of prosperity but because of souls. God planted us on earth to bear the fruits of righteousness—winning souls, healing the sick, delivering the captives, and giving hope to the hopeless,” Ogbenor said.
He cautioned against the growing trend of prosperity-driven sermons, stressing that Christians who prioritize wealth over salvation risk missing the ultimate purpose of Christ’s death.
“Money and wealth are additions, not the mission. If a man gains the whole world but loses his soul, it profits nothing. The major concern of God is the salvation of souls, not accumulation of riches,” he added.
The cleric noted that the reunion aspect of the programme brings together past and present staff, students, and associates of the hospital, many of whom now live abroad.
According to him, the event also serves as a spiritual homecoming for families and friends connected to the institution over the years.
Ogbenor advised Christians yet to embrace genuine faith to “sit up and focus on the real reason why Jesus died—salvation and repentance.”
The three-day retreat, which continues online and onsite, is expected to end with renewed commitment among participants to righteous living and evangelism.
