… ₦7.3bn seized from failed local council project
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has announced the repatriation of $700 million in stolen funds linked to corrupt Nigerian officials and stashed in foreign accounts.
The commission also disclosed that ₦7.3 billion was recovered from failed and abandoned projects in several local government areas across the North-East.
ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu (SAN), made this known on Thursday during a one-day media dialogue with journalists from the North-East and North-West in Kano.
Aliyu explained that the dialogue was part of the agency’s efforts to strengthen collaboration with the media in the fight against corruption. He stressed that transparency and accountability in governance cannot be achieved without the active involvement of journalists.
“The ICPC is committed to ensuring that stolen wealth is traced, recovered, and returned for the benefit of Nigerians. Our partnership with the media is crucial in exposing corrupt practices and ensuring accountability at all levels,” Aliyu said.
The anti-graft boss noted that abandoned projects remain one of the biggest leakages of public funds, adding that the commission is determined to hold contractors and officials accountable.
Meanwhile, the Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Nigeria has reiterated that corruption, weak institutions, and poor regulation remain major obstacles to Nigeria’s economic prosperity.
At its investiture ceremony in Lagos, the institute stressed that governance in Nigeria requires leaders who embody integrity, fairness, and accountability, not just in words but in action.
