The Oyo State Police Command has arrested an Islamic cleric, identified as Alfa Bashiru, after he was allegedly caught with suspected human flesh along the Ibadan Expressway.
The Command’s spokesperson, CSP Adewale Osifeso, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, noting that the cleric was intercepted on Wednesday at about 11:30 a.m. by operatives of the Federal Highway Patrol at the Toll Gate axis.
According to Osifeso, Bashiru was travelling in a white bus with registration number XA 551 IRG when the suspicious substance was discovered in his possession.
“The suspect claimed during interrogation that he bought the item in Lagos. He has since been handed over to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, for further investigations,” the police spokesman stated.
He added that forensic analysis was ongoing to ascertain the authenticity and source of the flesh.
In a separate operation, police operatives recovered an abandoned Toyota Camry car with registration number LSD 957 JX during a Stop and Search exercise in the state.
“The driver of the vehicle took to his heels after being flagged down, leaving the car behind. The vehicle has been taken into custody, and legitimate owners with verifiable documents are urged to contact the Command,” Osifeso said.
He emphasized that routine Stop and Search operations were part of deliberate strategies to ensure the safety of residents and travellers, stressing that they were not “security theatrics” as often misconstrued.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Femi Haruna, commended members of the public for their cooperation and assured that the Command would sustain its efforts in crime prevention and the protection of lives and property.
