Nigeria’s Remo Stars kicked off their CAF Champions League campaign in emphatic fashion on Sunday, hammering Comoros’ US Zilimadjou 4-0 in the first leg of their preliminary round clash at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta.
Goals from Leonard Ngenge, Ebuka Anthony, Adama Goita, and Samson Olasupo ensured a dominant display by the Nigerian champions, giving them a comfortable advantage ahead of the return fixture.
Ngenge opened the scoring in the 12th minute, pouncing on a loose ball inside the area to hand the Sky Blue Stars an early lead.
The Ikenne-based side doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time, when Anthony neatly finished off a move initiated by Abubakar Ibrahim and Chigozie Chilekwu.
Coach Daniel Ogunmodede’s men maintained control after the restart, with substitutes making instant impact.
Ten minutes into the second half, Goita nodded home from an Ibrahim cross to make it 3-0. Another substitute, Olasupo, sealed the rout with a composed strike after being set up by Haruna Hadi.
Despite a few attempts, Zilimadjou barely troubled goalkeeper Adeniyi Obassa as Remo Stars dictated proceedings from start to finish.
The Nigerian champions, who are making their second appearance in the CAF elite competition, will return to the same venue on Friday for the second leg, with an aggregate winner set to face South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in the final qualifying round.
