Former Super Eagles striker, Victor Ezeji, has been arrested by the Rivers State Police Command over allegations of fraud and threats to life linked to a multi-million-naira diesel deal.
Ezeji, a veteran of Nigerian football and one-time forward for Enyimba and Sharks FC, was picked up in Port Harcourt on Monday, September 22, 2025, after weeks of surveillance by detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
Police sources told PLATFORM TIMES that the ex-international and his wife, Mrs. Celestina Onyemaeche Ezeji, allegedly bought 60,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) valued at ₦39.8 million from a businessman, identified as Dagogo Emmanuel, but issued dud cheques in payment.
The couple was said to have gone into hiding since July before operatives eventually tracked Ezeji down in Port Harcourt. He is currently being held at the SCID headquarters in the Rivers State capital.
“During interrogation, Ezeji admitted knowledge of the transaction and confirmed signing the cheques,” a police source said. “However, he denied knowledge of his wife’s whereabouts.”
Investigators disclosed that efforts are ongoing to arrest Mrs. Ezeji, who is still on the run.
Meanwhile, the player’s brother, Chuks Ezeji, has defended him, insisting that the ex-Super Eagles striker was not directly involved in the deal.
“Victor was not directly involved in the business transaction. It was Mrs. Ezeji who handled everything using his name,” Chuks told journalists.
The arrest of the 43-year-old former international, once celebrated for his exploits in the Nigerian Professional Football League, has sent shockwaves across the sports community, with many calling for due process in handling the case.
Police authorities assured that investigations were ongoing and promised that justice would be served.
