A police inspector, identified as Aminu Ibrahim, has died after accidentally shooting himself while on duty in Kano State.
The incident reportedly occurred around 5:40 am on Saturday at Hotoro, within the premises of Basnaj Global Resources Limited.
Ibrahim, who was attached to the Hotoro Division under the Kano State Police Command, was said to have entered a toilet when his AK-47 rifle, slung around his neck, discharged.
According to counter-insurgency publication, Zagazola Makama, preliminary investigations revealed that the officer accidentally pulled the trigger while squatting, leading to a fatal gunshot wound to his stomach.
“The rifle, with registration number GT 4177, was recovered cocked and unsafe, alongside an empty shell. Twenty-nine rounds of ammunition were accounted for against the 30 earlier issued to him,” a source quoted by Makama said.
The inspector was rushed to a nearby hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival. His remains have since been deposited at a mortuary for autopsy.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Kano Police Command, Haruna Abdullahi, for official confirmation proved unsuccessful, as calls and messages to his phone went unanswered.
The tragic incident has thrown the police community in Kano into mourning, with colleagues describing Ibrahim as a committed officer whose death came as a shock.
