Troops of the 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army, in collaboration with operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), have arrested two men posing as mobile policemen while transporting large quantities of cannabis in Taraba State.
The suspects were intercepted at Takum Junction in Wukari Local Government Area following credible intelligence, according to a statement on Wednesday by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Lt. Umar Muhammad.
Muhammad said the two men were dressed in police uniforms and were caught with two Toyota Hilux vehicles loaded with cannabis. “Preliminary investigation revealed that none of the occupants are serving policemen.
The cannabis-laden vehicles were traced to have been loaded from Akure, Ondo State, and were heading towards Adamawa State before they were intercepted,” he stated.
He added that the occupants of the second Hilux abandoned their vehicle and fled the scene when they sighted the troops.
According to the Army, a total of 1,134 blocks of cannabis were recovered. The suspects and the exhibits have been handed over to the NDLEA office in Wukari for further investigation and prosecution.
The Commander, 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Kingsley Uwa, commended the troops and NDLEA operatives for their synergy and resilience in the operation.
He vowed that the Brigade would sustain its efforts to ensure Taraba remains unsafe for drug traffickers and other criminals.
Uwa also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to strengthen ongoing operations in the state.
The arrest comes days after NDLEA operatives in Lagos apprehended two suspected drug kingpins and seized multiple consignments of cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine, underscoring the growing fight against drug cartels across the country.
