A legal practitioner, Abdulbasit Abolade Shuaib, has appealed to Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, to urgently declare a state of emergency on roads in Abeokuta, describing their condition as deplorable and worsening daily.
Shuaib made the appeal in an open letter dated October 2, 2025, where he lamented that the poor state of roads in the state capital had imposed untold hardship on residents, motorists, and business owners.
According to him, the situation had become unbearable, especially during the ongoing rainy season, which further exposed the fragile state of many major roads in Abeokuta.
He said, “As someone who resides and works within the state, I witness daily the untold hardship faced by road users, especially during this rainy season.
“The heavy downpours in recent weeks have further exposed the fragile state of these roads, making them almost impassable in some areas.”
The lawyer warned that the deteriorating road network was having severe economic consequences.
“The economic toll on motorists, business owners, commuters, and even government vehicles is alarming, with car owners spending heavily on repairs due to bad roads,” he wrote.
Shuaib further expressed worry that the government’s “silence and inaction in the face of these infrastructural failings suggest a level of neglect that should not be allowed to persist, especially in a state that prides itself as the Gateway State.”
While commending Governor Abiodun’s efforts in other areas of governance, the legal practitioner insisted that the worsening road crisis required urgent intervention.
He therefore urged the governor to act swiftly.
“Your Excellency, as a concerned stakeholder in the Ogun State project, I respectfully urge you to declare a state of emergency on roads within Abeokuta, and to mobilise urgent intervention measures that will bring relief to the suffering masses,” the letter read.
Shuaib stressed that his call was not politically motivated but driven by genuine concern for the welfare of the people.
He maintained that rehabilitating Abeokuta’s road network would boost economic activities and restore public confidence in the Abiodun administration.
