Suspected bandits have abducted two councillors and a community Imam in Tsauni, Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday night around 7 p.m., threw the community into panic, as the victims were reportedly seized in front of their houses shortly after prayers.
Confirming the development on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said the abducted councillors represent Gidan Gona and Tsibiri wards in Maradun Local Government Area.
He added that the Imam of Tsauni community was also taken away by the gunmen.
“The victims were abducted right in front of their houses at about 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening, shortly after prayers.
“The command has deployed operatives to the area, and efforts are ongoing to rescue them,” Abubakar told journalists via telephone.
He urged residents to support security operatives with useful information, stressing that timely intelligence could help curtail similar attacks.
The community, which hosts internally displaced persons displaced by banditry from other parts of Zamfara, is located behind the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) headquarters in Gusau.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Maradun Local Government, Sanusi Gamagiwa, corroborated the police account but revealed that a total of six persons were initially taken away by the attackers.
“Three of them were later released, while the two councillors and the Imam are still in captivity. So far, the bandits have not reached out to any of us to state their demands,” Gamagiwa said.
The abduction adds to the rising spate of insecurity in Zamfara, despite the government’s promises to restore peace and protect residents from armed gangs who have terrorised the state for years.
