Tragedy struck on Thursday in Benin City, Edo State, as the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Edo State Command, Mr. Gbenga Agun, slumped and died shortly after delivering a keynote address at a public event.
Agun, who was attending a programme organised by the International Association of World Peace Advocates, reportedly collapsed moments after completing his speech.
He was immediately rushed to the Military Hospital along Airport Road, Benin, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.
Eyewitnesses at the venue described the incident as shocking and sudden, noting that the commandant had shown no signs of distress while addressing participants at the event.
As of the time of filing this report, the Edo State Command of the NSCDC and the agency’s national headquarters were yet to officially comment on the development.
The late Agun’s death has thrown the security community in Edo and beyond into mourning, with colleagues and stakeholders describing it as a painful and unexpected loss.
