Traditional rulers in Ife North Local Government of Osun State have issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, demanding that he prove his allegations against the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, or face legal action.
The monarchs, under the umbrella of Origbo Meje Obas, on Thursday condemned the Iwo monarch’s recent viral video where he accused the Ooni of conspiring with his former Canadian wife to poison him.
Speaking on behalf of the council, the Salu of Edunabon and Acting Vice Chairman of Ife North Traditional Council, Oba Kehinde Adesoji, described the allegation as defamatory and a desecration of the revered stool of the Ooni.
“He who alleges must prove. We are giving the Oluwo of Iwo a 21-day ultimatum to either write to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, or take His Imperial Majesty, the Ooni of Ife, to court over the claims.
Otherwise, we will institute legal proceedings against him at the expiration of the ultimatum,” Adesoji declared.
The monarchs also demanded that Oba Akanbi retract all statements linking Oba Ogunwusi to the alleged assassination plot, insisting that the claim amounted to a criminal accusation capable of tarnishing the image of the foremost Yoruba traditional ruler.
They warned that failure to substantiate the allegation would not only attract legal action but also be seen as an affront to Yoruba tradition and the unity of the traditional institution in Osun State.
Oba Akanbi had in the viral video claimed that the Ooni allegedly plotted to eliminate him in collaboration with his estranged wife in a bid to conceal his involvement in the process that brought Ogunwusi to the throne of Ife.
The fresh ultimatum has now heightened tensions in the state’s traditional circle, with observers calling for restraint to prevent further escalation of the royal dispute.
