The Armed Forces of Nigeria has confirmed the arrest of 16 military officers for alleged acts of indiscipline and violation of service regulations, with those found culpable after investigation to face court martial.
Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, stressing that the military would not tolerate any conduct that undermines its integrity or threatens its constitutional duties under democratic authority.
According to him, preliminary investigations revealed that the arrested officers’ grievances were largely tied to repeated failure in promotion examinations and perceived stagnation in their military careers.
He said, “The Armed Forces of Nigeria wishes to inform the public that a routine military exercise has resulted in the arrest of sixteen officers over issues of indiscipline and breach of service regulations.
“Investigations have revealed that their grievances stemmed largely from perceived career stagnation caused by repeated failure in promotion examinations, among other issues.”
The Defence spokesman explained that some of the affected officers were already facing trial for different offences before their arrest.
He maintained that the military’s internal disciplinary system would be fully applied.
“Upon completion of investigation, indicted officers will face the full military disciplinary process in accordance with established procedures to ensure accountability and preserve professionalism within the Armed Forces,” Gusau added.
He stressed that the action was not politically motivated but part of routine disciplinary measures aimed at maintaining order, loyalty, and professionalism within the ranks.
“The Armed Forces will not tolerate behaviour that undermines the integrity of the institution or threatens its constitutional role under democratic authority.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains fully committed to its constitutional responsibilities and will remain professional at all times,” he stated.
Cases of disciplinary action are not new in the Nigerian military, which in the past has sanctioned personnel for mutiny, desertion, and other conduct prejudicial to service discipline.
