A legal practitioner and concerned citizen of Ogun State, Abdulbasit Abolade Shuaib, has once again raised alarm over the deplorable state of roads in Abeokuta, warning Governor Dapo Abiodun that history would not forget his administration’s handling of the crisis.
Shuaib, in an open letter to the governor on Tuesday, said the latest downpour had exposed the “painful neglect and worsening condition of roads” across the Ogun State capital, leaving commuters stranded and vehicles damaged.
The lawyer had last week called for declaration of a state of emergency on roads in Abeokuta, due to the dilapidated state of roads in the state capital.
In the latest letter, he lamented “the Ibara Junction towards Omida Market, Iyana Mortuary towards Leme, Ijaiye, and Isale Ake were heavily flooded because of the absence of proper drainage to channel water. The situation has become harmful to vehicles and pedestrians.”
He listed other flood-ravaged areas to include Asero, Adatan, Car Wash, Somorin, Alogi, Eleweran down to Osiele, Saje Junction, Elega Junction, Ajitadun, and Obada, describing them as “symbols of neglect, pain, and daily frustration for residents.”
The legal practitioner noted that beyond the inconvenience, the poor road network had imposed huge economic and safety burdens on the people.
“Vehicle owners are spending excessively on repairs, small businesses are suffering, and more troubling is the risk these roads pose to public safety,” he stressed.
While acknowledging the governor’s efforts in some sectors, Shuaib urged him to take immediate and extraordinary steps to salvage the road infrastructure in the state capital.
“Your Excellency, we recognise your efforts and the weight of responsibility on your shoulders. But we also plead with you to heed this cry from the ground.
“The people of Ogun State deserve accessible, motorable, and safe roads not just in theory, but in reality,” he appealed.
The lawyer called for the immediate declaration of a state of emergency on roads in Abeokuta, starting with the most affected routes, warning that silence was no longer an option.
“This is not a political appeal. It is a humanitarian one. Your legacy as governor will be shaped by how these concerns are addressed. The people are watching, and history is taking notes,” he said.
