A violent clash between soldiers and policemen in Bauchi State has left a police constable dead, reigniting concerns over the recurring hostilities among Nigeria’s security agencies.
The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday by its spokesperson, SP Ahmed Wakil.
According to the statement, the confrontation occurred on Friday, October 10, in the Bayan Gari area of Bauchi metropolis during a routine police patrol.
Wakil said the command received a distress call indicating a serious altercation between a patrol team led by Inspector Hussaini Samaila and two men who allegedly assaulted one of the officers, Constable Ukasha Muhammed.
“The remaining team members swiftly intervened, apprehending one of the assailants while the other fled,” Wakil said.
The arrested suspect was later identified as Private Usman Mubarak, a soldier attached to Operation Safe Haven in Jos, Plateau State.
Wakil explained that the situation escalated when two other soldiers — Private Yakubu Yahuza and Private Godspower Gabriel — arrived at the scene armed and partially dressed in military uniforms.
“They approached the patrol team and shot Constable Ukasha Muhammed in the left chest before fleeing,” he added.
The injured officer was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, where he was confirmed dead. His body has been deposited at the hospital’s morgue.
Wakil said the command had taken the detained soldier into custody and launched a full-scale homicide investigation into the incident.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has constituted a team of seasoned homicide detectives to ensure a professional and timely investigation aimed at securing justice,” he stated.
He appealed for calm among police personnel while urging restraint as investigations continue.
“The Commissioner extends heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased officer and prays that Almighty Allah grants him eternal rest and his family the fortitude to bear the loss,” the statement concluded.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the fragile relationship between Nigeria’s security agencies, which have recorded several violent confrontations in recent years.
