Convicted kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans, was on Monday re-arraigned before the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, over the alleged murder of two police officers during his years-long kidnapping operations.
Evans appeared in court alongside his co-defendant, Joseph Emeka, as the duo faced a fresh five-count charge bordering on murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping.
Both defendants pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them before Justice A.O. Ogala.
According to the Lagos State prosecution team, the offences were allegedly committed during Evans’ notorious kidnapping operations that spread across Lagos prior to his arrest in June 2017.
The prosecution told the court that the slain officers were killed while trailing Evans’ criminal gang, underscoring the deadly nature of his operations that terrorised residents and law enforcement for years.
Evans, who was arrested on June 10, 2017, in Magodo, following an intense police surveillance operation, is already serving a life sentence for kidnapping after his conviction in February 2022.
The trial judge at the time described him as “a criminal mastermind who inflicted deep pain and suffering on his victims.”
The latest re-arraignment marks a continuation of multiple prosecutions brought against the convicted kidnapper as the state government pursues justice for more victims linked to his reign of terror.
Justice Ogala adjourned the case for continuation of trial.
