…Reaffirms JAMB’s sole authority over tertiary admissions
The Federal Government has dismissed reports circulating on social media and some online platforms claiming that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has been scrapped as the body responsible for tertiary admissions in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the claim as “false, misleading, and entirely baseless.”
Dr. Alausa said neither the Ministry nor any authorized government agency issued such an announcement, insisting that JAMB remains the only legally recognized body empowered to conduct entrance examinations and coordinate admissions into all tertiary institutions across the country.
“For the avoidance of doubt, JAMB remains the statutory and legally empowered body responsible for conducting entrance examinations and coordinating admissions into all tertiary institutions in Nigeria,” the Minister declared.
He explained that the existing admission structure through JAMB remains fully operational and warned students, parents, and school administrators to disregard any contrary report, describing it as a deliberate attempt to cause confusion in the education sector.
Dr. Alausa further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s confidence in JAMB’s processes, stressing that the Ministry will continue to work closely with the examination body and other relevant agencies to ensure fairness, transparency, and merit-based admissions.
“The Federal Government is committed to preserving the integrity of the tertiary education admission process and will not condone any attempt to undermine established procedures,” he said.
The Ministry also cautioned bloggers and media platforms against disseminating unverified information, warning that spreading fake news could mislead students and damage public trust in educational institutions.
It urged the public to rely solely on verified communication channels of the Ministry of Education and JAMB for authentic updates on educational policies and admissions.
“There has been no change in JAMB’s statutory role. The Board remains central and indispensable in Nigeria’s tertiary education framework,” the statement concluded.
The clarification followed widespread social media posts claiming that the Federal Government had removed JAMB from the admission process, allowing universities and colleges to admit candidates independently.
The misleading report had sparked anxiety among parents and prospective undergraduates before the government’s prompt denial on Thursday.
