The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Lawal Faruq for allegedly setting his ex-girlfriend, Omolola Hassan, ablaze during a violent confrontation inside a military barracks in Ibadan.
The shocking incident, which occurred earlier in the week, reportedly followed the breakdown of a romantic relationship between the two. Sources said the suspect, enraged by the victim’s decision to end their affair, allegedly doused her with petrol and set her on fire.
According to reports shared by counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama on X (formerly Twitter), Faruq confessed that he and the victim had previously sworn an oath never to part ways.
“The suspect admitted that they both took an oath of eternal love, but when she decided to quit the relationship, he became furious and attacked her,” Makama wrote.
Eyewitnesses said soldiers within the barracks rushed to the scene after hearing the woman’s screams. They reportedly put out the fire and took her to Yawiri Hospital, Akobo, where she is currently receiving treatment for severe burns.
One eyewitness told PLATFORM TIMES that the suspect had been acting obsessively before the attack.
“He kept saying she couldn’t leave him. When she refused to return to him, he lost control,” the source said.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer for Oyo State, SP Adewale Osifeso, said the suspect was in custody and that a thorough investigation had begun.
“The matter is under investigation. We will provide more details as soon as possible,” Osifeso stated.
Meanwhile, residents of the area have condemned the act, describing it as a disturbing case of possessive violence.
As of press time, the victim’s condition remained critical, while police investigators are working to determine whether the act was premeditated.
