The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed concern over a disturbing trend among internet fraudsters, popularly known as “Yahoo Boys,” who are allegedly resorting to ritual practices in their quest for illicit wealth.
The anti-graft agency, in a statement posted on its official X handle on Friday, October 17, warned that the new development marks a dangerous evolution of cybercrime in Nigeria, where digital scams are now being reinforced by diabolical means.
According to the EFCC, the fraudsters — now referred to as “G Boys” — have begun “going spiritual,” seeking ritual powers to enhance their fraudulent schemes and evade justice.
The statement read: “G Boys are now going spiritual, involving themselves in rituals and making it the new usual. EFCC will come for any individual; it won’t be business as usual.”
The Commission condemned the trend, describing it as a worrisome reflection of moral decay among Nigerian youths. It also assured the public that no form of spiritual fortification or ritual practice would shield offenders from the long arm of the law.
“The EFCC is fully aware of these developments and remains committed to bringing perpetrators to justice,” the agency stated. “No amount of ritual or charm will prevent the law from taking its course.”
The agency further cautioned Nigerians, especially young people, against succumbing to the lure of “get-rich-quick” schemes, stressing that cybercrime has devastating effects on the nation’s image, economy, and youth productivity.
It also urged parents, religious leaders, and educators to intensify moral guidance and mentorship, warning that the normalization of ritual-related fraud signals a deeper social crisis that must be addressed collectively.
The EFCC reaffirmed its resolve to “protect society from the harmful effects of cybercrime and money-related offences” through investigation, prosecution, and public enlightenment.
