The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested 25 persons, including 18 men and seven women, over an alleged attempt to conduct a same-sex marriage ceremony in the state.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at the Fatima Event Centre in the Hotoro area of Kano metropolis.
Deputy Commander-General of the Hisbah Board, Mujahedeen Aminudeen, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday, saying the operation followed a tip-off from a concerned resident.
“We received credible information that some individuals were allegedly organising a same-sex wedding in Hotoro. Our operatives stormed the venue and arrested 25 suspects, including the supposed groom,” Aminudeen said.
He added that the suspects, who were drawn from communities such as Sheka, Yar Gaya and Kofar Nasarawa, were apprehended after Hisbah officers disrupted the event.
“They are currently in our custody and will be charged to court after investigations are completed,” the Deputy Commander disclosed.
Aminudeen reaffirmed the board’s commitment to upholding Islamic values and protecting the moral fabric of Kano State, describing the alleged act as a violation of Sharia principles and the cultural norms of the state.
“We will not allow activities that tarnish the reputation of Kano or contradict our moral and religious standards. The board will continue to raid places that promote immorality,” he warned.
The Hisbah deputy commander further appealed to residents to support the board’s efforts by reporting what he described as “immoral gatherings and behaviour” within their communities.
“We are calling on members of the public to assist the board in curbing such vices by promptly reporting any suspected immoral activity,” he said.
Same-sex relationships are outlawed in Nigeria under the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014, which prescribes up to 14 years imprisonment for anyone convicted of engaging in or supporting such unions.
The arrest has reignited conversations on morality, human rights, and the role of religious policing in Nigeria’s northern states.
