The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Major General Abdullahi Adamgba Mohammed (rtd), former Chief of Staff to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo.
In a condolence message issued on Thursday by his media office, the Sultan commiserated with the deceased’s family, the Emir of Ilorin, and the government and people of Kwara State over the death of one of their most distinguished sons.
The late General Mohammed, who served Nigeria in various capacities both in the military and in public service, died on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at the age of 86, at his residence in Abuja.
Describing the death as “sorrowful though inevitable,” Sultan Abubakar extolled the deceased’s virtues of discipline, patriotism, and integrity.
“Late General Mohammed was not only a fine and brilliant officer but also a patriotic Nigerian, disciplined officer, and a man of unquestionable integrity who dedicated his life to national service,” the Sultan stated.
He added that Mohammed’s lifetime of commitment to the unity and progress of Nigeria remains exemplary for the younger generation.
The monarch further prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul, saying, “Since Allah, who gives life, takes it at any time He wishes, we are incapacitated, leaving us to fervently pray and request that Allah forgives him his sins and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.”
Major General Mohammed served as the Military Governor of Benue-Plateau State under General Murtala Mohammed’s administration between 1975 and 1976. He later became the Chief of Staff to Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo (1999–2007) and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua (2007–2008).
Until his death, he was widely respected as an elder statesman and a symbol of selfless service to the nation.
