Authorities have located the hideout of the schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls’ Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, and are closing in on the kidnappers, Senator Garba Maidoki has revealed.
Maidoki, who represents Kebbi South, said on Wednesday that intelligence reports indicate the abductors are still within the district where the attack occurred.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, he said:“We have a fair idea where the girls are, and we are sure they have not moved outside the Kebbi South Senatorial District.”
The lawmaker expressed confidence that the students, believed to be about 25 in number, could be rescued within days.
“There is high hope that the girls will return home in one or two days,” Maidoki assured.
The armed attack, carried out on Monday, left the school’s vice principal dead after he attempted to stop the gunmen from taking the girls. The incident triggered nationwide outrage and renewed concerns over the resurging tragedy of mass school kidnappings.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, acting on President Bola Tinubu’s directive, arrived in Kebbi on Wednesday with a high-powered delegation that included APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda.
Shettima condemned the attack as “tragic and unacceptable,” assuring residents that the government would deploy “every necessary resource” to secure the release of the abducted students.
“We will not rest until these girls are safely home. Their rescue is a national priority,” he said during the sympathy visit.
International bodies, including UNICEF, have called for urgent intervention, linking the abduction to the unending cycle of school-targeted kidnappings that gained global attention after the 2014 Chibok girls’ abduction.
In response to the gravity of the situation, President Tinubu cancelled planned official trips to South Africa and Angola, directing all security agencies to intensify efforts toward a safe rescue operation.
The latest kidnapping has again spotlighted the vulnerability of schools in Nigeria’s northern region, where armed groups increasingly target students for ransom, political pressure, or territorial control.
As the nation awaits updates on the rescue operation, anxious parents and community members in Maga continue to hold vigil, hoping the senator’s promise of a quick return becomes reality.
