Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team on Thursday vowed to challenge the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which convicted the IPOB leader of terrorism and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Speaking with journalists moments after Justice James Omotosho delivered the ruling, Kanu’s counsel and legal consultant, Aloy Ejimakor, described the verdict as a “travesty of justice” and insisted it would not stand.
Ejimakor questioned the basis of the conviction, arguing that the court erred in finding Kanu guilty for what he termed “mere spoken words.”
“This is the only day I have witnessed a man being convicted for mere pronouncements — for what he said with his mouth, not for anything he did with his hands,” he said.
He maintained that the evidence presented before the court did not support the charges, stressing that the broadcast cited in the judgment was not linked to any act of violence.
“The verdict is not consistent with the evidence laid before the court. The sentence is overbroad, cruel and unusual.
How can you convict a man for making a broadcast from an unnamed location without tying it to a single violent incident — not even a slap, let alone terrorism?” he said.
Ejimakor added that the legal team would immediately approach the Court of Appeal to seek redress, insisting that the ruling set a dangerous precedent.
“What kind of precedent is being laid here? We are heading to the Court of Appeal,” he declared. “That is the next court that sits as a jury in this country. We are confident the justices will review what happened today and agree that this judgment falls short of justice.”
He further noted that the team was prepared to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court if necessary.
“If the Court of Appeal disagrees with us, we head to the Supreme Court. Nnamdi Kanu is not going to stand convicted. His conviction will be overturned,” he affirmed.
The judgment has already generated intense reactions across the country, with many awaiting the next phase of the legal battle over the long-running trial of the IPOB leader.
