United States President, Donald Trump, has again taken a swipe at Nigeria, describing the country as “a disgrace” over what he called the ongoing killing in parts of the country.
Speaking on a conservative radio programme on Friday, a conversation later highlighted by Fox News Trump accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect Christian communities from extremist attacks, insisting that “thousands” have been killed.
The US President, who previously designated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern over alleged religious persecution, said he was considering halting all forms of American aid to Nigeria, warning that Washington “could take further action” if the killings persist.
“Nigeria is a disgrace. The whole thing is a disgrace,” Trump declared.
“They’re killing people by the thousands. It’s a genocide, and I’m really angry about it. And we give a lot of subsidies to Nigeria. We’re going to end up stopping.”
Trump accused Islamist militants of targeting Christian communities and faulted Nigerian authorities for what he described as “weak and ineffective” responses to persistent violence in parts of the North.
He also repeated his earlier warning that the US would not hesitate to take military steps against extremist groups operating in Nigeria should the Nigerian government “fail to do more.”
“If the government won’t stop these attacks, we may have to do something about it,” he said.
Trump’s renewed criticism comes amid global concerns over deteriorating security in Nigeria, particularly in northern states where banditry, terrorism and communal clashes have led to mounting casualties.
The Nigerian government has yet to formally respond to Trump’s latest remarks.
