Three officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) were shot dead late Thursday when suspected Lakurawa terrorists launched a midnight assault on a border checkpoint in Bagudu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The attack, which occurred around 12am at Bakin Ruwa, a strategic crossing point along the Maje border corridor, has triggered panic across nearby communities already grappling with rising insecurity.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the gunmen stormed the post in large numbers and opened fire on immigration personnel on duty, killing three instantly.
The attackers also set ablaze an operational vehicle and destroyed the officers’ makeshift shelter before fleeing into the surrounding bush paths.
Local sources said the assault lasted several minutes, leaving residents terrified and security operatives scrambling for reinforcement.
“They came suddenly and started shooting. The officers had no chance. Three of them died on the spot,” a community member said, insisting on anonymity for fear of reprisals.
A security operative in Bagudu also confirmed the incident, describing it as “a coordinated terrorist hit” likely linked to the Lakurawa faction known to operate across parts of Kebbi, Sokoto and Niger Republic border communities.
Police Public Relations Officer for Kebbi State Command, SP Nafiu Abubakar, told PLATFORM TIMES that details of the attack were still being compiled but affirmed that security agencies had been deployed to the area.
“We are aware of the incident, but the full report from the field is still being processed. An investigation is underway,” he said.
The latest assault adds to growing concerns over porous border security in the North-West, where terrorist groups and cross-border criminal networks continue to stage attacks on security agents, travellers and villagers.
Residents have appealed for urgent reinforcement, warning that continued strikes on security formations could worsen the already fragile security situation along the border axis.
