The National Economic Council has approved ₦100 billion for the renovation and upgrade of training institutions belonging to the police and other security agencies across the country, PLATFORM TIMES reports.
The approval, which is subject to final sign-off by President Bola Tinubu, was reached at NEC’s 154th virtual meeting on Wednesday, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The Council also endorsed an additional ₦2.6 billion for consultancy services connected to the rehabilitation project.
The intervention follows the findings of an ad-hoc committee earlier set up to inspect and evaluate the state of security training facilities nationwide. Presenting the committee’s report, its chairman and Enugu State governor, Peter Mbah, described most of the institutions as “in dire condition,” stressing that their current state undermines the quality of personnel being trained to secure the country.
Mbah warned that unless urgent steps were taken, the decay in the facilities would continue to weaken the operational capacity of security agencies.
Responding, Vice President Shettima reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to restoring the institutions, saying the overhaul is critical to rebuilding Nigeria’s security architecture.
He also delivered a strong charge to state governors, insisting that ongoing economic reforms must translate into visible, measurable improvements in the living conditions of Nigerians.
“Governance is meaningful only when the people can feel it,” Shettima said. “Our task is not to admire problems but to solve them. Not to explain challenges, but to overcome them. And not to hope for progress, but to engineer it.”
He stressed that all tiers of government must shift from rhetoric to implementation, adding that policies should no longer end with announcements but must produce “tangible outcomes” in markets, schools, clinics and farms across communities nationwide.
The rehabilitation of security training institutions aligns with President Tinubu’s proposal at NEC’s 152nd meeting in October, where he called for a comprehensive revamp to strengthen the capacity of the nation’s defence and law-enforcement formations.
The approved funds are expected to kick-start the first phase of the overhaul once presidential ratification is secured.
