A federal lawmaker representing a constituency in Zamfara State narrowly escaped death on Tuesday after an angry mob descended on him in Dansadau town, beating and dragging him on the ground over allegations of poor representation and neglect of constituents.
A viral video of the incident, obtained by PLATFORM TIMES, showed the lawmaker—said to be a member of the House of Representatives—being slapped and manhandled by a furious crowd as security operatives struggled to shield him from further assault.
In the footage, the visibly enraged residents were heard chanting “bamayi” in Hausa, a term commonly used to express rejection and anger, as the lawmaker was pulled in different directions before security personnel intervened.
Eyewitnesses said the attack was sparked by deep-seated frustration among residents, who accused the lawmaker of abandoning the community after winning the election.
“He has not done anything for us since he was elected. No projects, no empowerment, not even visits to the constituency,” one of the voices heard in the video alleged.
Residents claimed that repeated appeals for development projects, constituency presence and empowerment programmes had been ignored, leading to growing resentment that eventually boiled over into violence.
Security operatives later succeeded in overpowering the attackers and whisked the lawmaker away in a waiting vehicle.
As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the lawmaker had not been officially confirmed, while the Zamfara State Police Command and the House of Representatives were yet to issue statements on the incident.
