An Abeokuta Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday remanded a 55-year-old herbal practitioner, Ogunyemi Adetunji, for allegedly selling a harmful herbal substance to three women, leaving their vagina injured.
Adetunji, whose plea was not taken, was arraigned on a one-count charge of selling a liquid substance claimed to have medicinal properties but which allegedly caused injuries to the victims.
PLATFORM TIMES had reported that police in Ogun State arrested Adetunji after a petition was written against him for allegedly selling unapproved medicines to some women which led to their vaginal blockage.
During his arraignment, the Police Prosecutor, Mr. Solomon Babalola, told the court that the prosecution had filed a motion ex parte seeking an order to remand Adetunji pending legal advice from the Ogun State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
He urged the court to remand the defendant for 60 days at the Ibara Correctional Centre.
Babalola said Adetunji, in 2024 at Obada-Oko area of Abeokuta, sold a liquid substance to one Opeyemi Ewulo, claiming it could treat fibroid.
He further alleged that Adetunji sold the same substance, which is not approved by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), to Enlyn Bassay and Patience Enyeonusi, causing injuries to their private parts after application.
The prosecutor stated that the offence contravened Section 21(1) of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015.
Magistrate Mrs. A.K. Araba ordered that Adetunji be remanded at Ibara Correctional Centre and adjourned the case until December 19 for ruling on the application.
