The driver of the Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle involved in the fatal crash that claimed the lives of two close associates of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has been arraigned before a Sagamu Magistrate Court in Ogun State, with the case adjourned till January 20, 2026.
The Ogun State Police Command said the driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, appeared in court on Friday following his arrest over the accident that occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed in a statement issued in Abeokuta that the adjournment was to allow for further proceedings.
Kayode was arrested barely two days after the police confirmed his involvement in the crash, which happened near Danco area of the expressway.
The accident led to the death of Kevin Latif Ayodele, 36, a British-Nigerian, and Sina Ghami, 36, a British citizen. Both men were members of Joshua’s training and support team.
Police sources said the driver, a long-standing member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, had earlier been discharged from a Lagos hospital on New Year’s Eve after receiving treatment for minor injuries.
He was subsequently taken to the Ogun State Police Command headquarters in Abeokuta for questioning.
Investigations revealed that the Lexus SUV, with registration number KRD 850 HN, was allegedly travelling above the 65mph speed limit when a tyre burst during an overtaking manoeuvre.
The vehicle reportedly veered off control and crashed into an illegally parked truck carrying soya beans on the hard shoulder of the road.
The impact of the collision tore off the nearside of the SUV, killing Ghami and Ayodele on the spot. Joshua, who was seated behind the driver, and Kayode sustained only minor injuries.
First responders at the scene described Joshua’s survival as miraculous.
Although the driver appeared in court on Friday, details of the specific charges against him were not immediately disclosed.
Meanwhile, the Lagos and Ogun state governments have confirmed that Joshua has been discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, after doctors declared him clinically fit to continue his recovery from home.
The bodies of the two victims were later flown out of Lagos aboard a Turkish Airlines cargo flight to London via Istanbul for burial arrangements.
The next court sitting on January 20 is expected to provide clarity on the charges against Kayode and the outcome of the police investigation.
