Abedamola Joshua, uncle of former world boxing champion Anthony Joshua, has condemned what he described as the “lackadaisical attitude” of emergency services following the tragic accident that claimed the lives of two of the boxer’s friends.
Speaking on the incident, Adedamola said he was distressed by the treatment of victims at the scene, including Joshua himself, who reportedly had to cross the median after the crash instead of being attended to on a stretcher.
“It is shocking and unacceptable,” he said. “When someone is in such trauma, every effort must be made to minimise stress.
“Joshua should have been put in an ambulance immediately and treated professionally. Abroad, a helicopter would have been on the scene within five minutes for evacuation. Here, we are left to watch such gory scenes unfold.”
Adedamola further called for the government to station ambulances along accident-prone stretches of the road where the tragedy occurred.
“It is not enough to have Federal Road Safety Corps officials checking vehicle documents. There must also be ambulances ready to respond immediately to accidents, because they happen frequently on this road,” he said.
He also criticized bystanders at the scene, some of whom recorded videos instead of assisting the victims.
“Some Nigerians act badly at accident scenes. Instead of helping, they make videos or even steal from victims. We even heard that Anthony Joshua’s phone was stolen.
This must be discouraged. Police and emergency responders should reach the scene promptly and secure the area,” he added.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage online, highlighting concerns over emergency response protocols and public behavior at accident scenes in Nigeria.
