The Edo State Police Command has arrested a woman, Martina Dachung, for allegedly selling her newborn baby boy for the sum of N1.4 million in Uromi, Edo Central Senatorial District.
The police said two other suspects, including a nurse, were also arrested in connection with the alleged illegal baby trafficking deal.
The Command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday, stating that the arrest followed a report by a resident, Ebhomien Matthew Asibor.
According to the police, Asibor alerted the command after he became aware of a suspected trafficking arrangement involving a nursing mother.
“On January 8, 2026, one Ebhomien Matthew Asibor of Uromi informed the Command after learning that a mother was allegedly involved in a baby trafficking arrangement,” the statement read.
Ikoedem said operatives from the Iruekpen Divisional Police Headquarters swiftly swung into action and arrested Dachung, who reportedly confessed and led officers to other suspects linked to the transaction.
“Further investigation led to the arrest of one Matron Ighalo Grace of Eguavon Medical Centre, Uromi, and Oha Promise, all of whom were connected to the illegal sale,” the police said.
The police added that the newborn baby was safely recovered during the operation, while evidence of the transaction, including the sum of N1.4 million, was also retrieved.
ASP Ikoedem noted that all the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Monday Agbonika, assured residents that the command would not relent in its efforts to rid Edo State of all forms of criminality.
“The Edo State Police Command will continue to sustain the onslaught against criminals and criminal networks to ensure the safety of lives and property,” Agbonika said.
He also urged members of the public to continue to provide timely and credible information to security agencies, stressing that such cooperation remained critical to effective policing and the maintenance of law and order in the state.
