Tragedy struck the Nigeria Police Force in Rivers State on Sunday as an inspector allegedly mishandled his rifle inside a moving vehicle, killing a fellow officer and seriously injuring another.
The incident occurred around 1pm while officers attached to a multinational logistics firm in Onne were travelling from Life Camp to their quarters.
The officer identified as Inspector Victor Okus, attached to Hintex Logistics under the supervision of the 19 Police Mobile Force, reportedly discharged his firearm accidentally, hitting two colleagues from the 14 PMF unit, Yola.
The injured officers were immediately rushed to Nobsams Hospital in Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt, where one of them, Inspector Ibrahim Sani, was confirmed dead by medical personnel. The second victim, Inspector Daniel Dauda, is currently receiving treatment.
A police signal obtained by PLATFORM TIMES stated that the shooting resulted from negligence in handling the weapon inside the vehicle.
“As a result, two personnel of No. 14 PMF Yola who were in the same vehicle with him were hit by the bullet and rushed to hospital,” the report noted.
Following the incident, Okus was disarmed, declared a defaulter and taken into custody at the Trans-Amadi Divisional Headquarters, pending the outcome of an investigation.
Police authorities said further updates would be communicated as investigations continue into the tragic shooting.
