Tragedy struck the University of Lagos community as a young law graduate, Maryam Agoro, died barely 24 hours after participating in the institution’s convocation ceremony.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that Agoro, a member of the Class of 2023 from the Faculty of Law, attended the university’s 2024/2025 convocation held on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, before her sudden death the following day.
The heartbreaking news broke on social media on Thursday after a user, identified as @plantcodesss on X, announced her passing, triggering an outpouring of grief from friends, former classmates and members of the UNILAG community.
In a tribute shared online, the user described Agoro as resilient and inspiring, recalling that she had battled health challenges in the past but remained determined to complete her studies.
“She did her convocation yesterday and today she’s no more. You deserve to be celebrated and you will be,” the post read.
“After seeing you in that miserable condition the last time, I hoped you’d get better. I know you’re smiling from where you are because UNILAG didn’t end you — you ended UNILAG in joy.”
Classmates and colleagues flooded social media with condolence messages, describing her death as shocking and painful, while offering prayers for her family and loved ones.
As of press time, the cause of death had not been officially disclosed. The university authorities were yet to issue a formal statement on the incident.
