The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has said he will not take more than one wife, citing his desire to preserve peace, balance and stability in his family life, despite traditional expectations that monarchs should practise polygamy.
The revered Itsekiri monarch made the disclosure during an interview aired on BBC Pidgin and shared widely on social media on Friday.
Speaking on the demands of kingship and family life, the monarch said his decision was informed by the need to avoid unnecessary complications at home and to give adequate attention to his wife and children.
“I live between public duty and private life. When I am away from the throne, I prefer to be indoors with my family. That calm helps me stay balanced,” he said.
Ogiame Atuwatse III, who married Olori Ivie Atuwatse in 2014 and has three children with her, explained that he does not believe he has the emotional or physical capacity to manage multiple households.
“God did not give me the ability to handle polygamy, and I am comfortable with that. I cannot divide my energy among many families,” the monarch added.
He noted that the demands of the throne already consume much of his time, with frequent meetings and calls from government officials and other stakeholders, making quality time with his family even more precious.
According to him, maintaining a peaceful home environment helps him remain focused and effective in discharging his responsibilities as a traditional ruler.
The monarch’s comments have continued to generate conversations online, with many Nigerians praising his openness and family-centred leadership approach, while others debated the place of tradition and personal choice in royal marriages.
Ogiame Atuwatse III ascended the throne in 2021 as the 21st Olu of Warri, succeeding the late Ogiame Ikenwoli, and has since been noted for his modern outlook on leadership and governance within the Itsekiri Kingdom
