The Oyo State Police Command has intercepted a consignment of materials suspected to be explosive devices in Saki, Oke Ogun area of the state, and arrested the driver conveying them.
The command disclosed this in a statement on Sunday signed by its Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, noting that the arrest followed actionable intelligence that led to a stop-and-search operation by operatives in the area.
According to the police, the truck and the suspected explosive materials were immediately secured and taken into custody to prevent any potential threat to public safety.
“Acting on credible intelligence, operatives of the command intercepted a truck conveying materials suspected to be explosive devices during a stop-and-search operation in Saki,” the statement read.
It added that upon being briefed, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Femi Haruna, ordered a comprehensive investigation into the development.
Specialists from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit and the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Unit were subsequently deployed to safely secure the items and commence forensic examination.
The police said detailed analysis was ongoing to determine the exact nature of the materials, their origin and intended use, while efforts were also being intensified to establish whether the suspect acted alone or as part of a wider criminal network.
The driver of the truck has been taken into custody and is currently cooperating with investigators, the command added.
The latest development comes amid heightened security concerns in parts of Oyo State following recent attacks on security personnel, including the killing of a police inspector during an ambush on a patrol team in the state on Saturday.
Residents of Saki and surrounding communities were, however, assured of their safety as the police said adequate measures had been put in place to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
