Rescue officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Tuesday saved a motorist suspected to be drunk after his vehicle rammed into a moving truck along the Ebute-Ero inward NEPA axis, Apongbon, Lagos, leaving him critically trapped.
Preliminary findings by LASTMA indicated that the male driver, who was behind the wheel of a Honda Jeep with registration number FKJ 562 JF, was allegedly driving at an excessive speed while descending the bridge when he lost control and crashed into the rear of a Scania truck.
The impact of the collision crushed the vehicle, trapping the driver and triggering an emergency rescue operation by LASTMA officials, who swiftly mobilised to the scene and extricated him from the mangled wreckage.
The injured motorist was subsequently handed over to security operatives and rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment, while traffic officers secured the accident scene to prevent secondary crashes and restore vehicular movement.
Officers of the Ebute-Ero Police Division provided security support during the rescue and recovery operations, as both vehicles were later evacuated and handed over to relevant authorities for investigation and possible prosecution.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, described the crash as avoidable and a stark reminder of the dangers associated with alcohol-impaired driving.
“Driving under the influence remains one of the deadliest forms of road indiscipline. It endangers not just the driver but innocent road users. We will continue to strengthen enforcement and public sensitisation to curb such reckless behaviour,” Giwa said.
Also commenting, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Mr Adebayo Taofiq, warned motorists against mixing alcohol with driving, stressing that impaired judgement and delayed reaction time often result in fatal crashes.
“This unfortunate incident could have resulted in loss of lives. LASTMA will intensify its enlightenment campaigns and enforcement to ensure that motorists understand that drinking and driving is a deadly combination that will not be tolerated on Lagos roads,” he said.
The agency urged motorists to obey traffic regulations, exercise patience on the roads and desist from alcohol consumption before driving, reiterating that safety remains the government’s top priority on Lagos highways.
