Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, has expelled no fewer than 15 students over the production and circulation of sex videos, drug-related offences and other acts of misconduct, as the institution reaffirmed a zero-tolerance stance on indiscipline and abuse of social media.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr Bode Ayorinde, disclosed this on Friday during the university’s 19th matriculation ceremony for 936 newly admitted students, warning that the misuse of digital platforms and involvement in vices capable of tarnishing the institution’s image would attract the stiffest sanctions.
Ayorinde said the university had dismissed several students, particularly females, for recording and sharing explicit videos linked to the institution, stressing that such actions were incompatible with the values of academic excellence and responsible citizenship.
“You place your phone before you, dance naked and tag Achievers University — you will be dismissed. Social media should be used for positive engagement, not to destroy destinies,” he said.
He also narrated the case of a final-year student who was expelled for comments on social media interpreted as inviting Boko Haram to the campus.
“He was almost graduating, but he posted that if Boko Haram came, he would deal with them. We refunded his N2.3 million and dismissed him,” Ayorinde disclosed.
The pro-chancellor further revealed that in 2025 alone, 17 students were dismissed for fraudulent examination clearance without payment of school fees, while three others were expelled for dealing in hard drugs.
According to him, the institution has zero tolerance for bullying, cultism, drug abuse, cybercrime, sexual misconduct and examination malpractice, adding that any student found guilty of such offences would be expelled without hesitation.
“If you are caught bullying anyone here, you are gone. Fighting, alcohol abuse, sexual molestation whether by students or staff — will not be tolerated,” he warned.
Ayorinde blamed some parents and guardians for encouraging misconduct among wards, urging them to consistently remind students of the importance of discipline, focus and moral uprightness.
In his remarks, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof Amos Aremu, told the newly admitted students that their journey at Achievers University would be marked by rigorous academic work, personal growth and character development, but cautioned them against social vices capable of ruining their futures.
“These halls are not for cultism, cybercrime, sexual impropriety or drug abuse. Such acts destroy lives and dreams,” Aremu said, assuring students of a safe, nurturing and intellectually stimulating environment.
Delivering the matriculation lecture titled “Your University, Your Network: Building Relationships and Opportunities,” Dr Ayobami Felix-Olaniyi urged students to embrace networking, mentorship and collaboration as vital tools for academic success and career advancement.
She encouraged them to build meaningful relationships with lecturers, staff and professionals beyond campus, stressing that strong networks could open doors to opportunities long after graduation.
The ceremony marked the formal admission of 936 fresh students into the institution for the 2025/2026 academic session.
