Former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, on Tuesday slumped outside his office in Abuja and was rushed to a private hospital for urgent medical attention.
A media aide, Emmanuel Nweke, said Maina lost his balance while attempting to access the office, fell on the staircase and hit his head before passing out.
In a statement, Nweke attributed the incident to complications arising from an untreated knee injury.
“The incident occurred following complications from an untreated knee injury, which caused him to lose balance and fall, resulting in his head hitting the staircase,” he said.
He added that medical personnel at the scene administered first aid before Maina was moved to a private hospital, where he is currently under close observation.
“Following preliminary assessment, one of the attending doctors advised that arrangements be considered for an air ambulance medical evacuation should his condition not stabilise within a short period,” Nweke stated, appealing to the public to respect the family’s privacy and offer prayers.
Maina was recently released from the Kuje Correctional Centre after serving part of an eight-year jail term over pension fraud.
In November 2021, the Federal High Court in Abuja convicted him on charges of laundering over N2bn belonging to pensioners, many of whom, the court noted, died without benefiting from their entitlements.
The conviction and sentence were upheld by the Court of Appeal in May 2023.
His health has previously generated public attention during trial proceedings, with Maina at different times collapsing in court and appearing in a wheelchair, prompting the court to order medical evaluations of his condition.
