The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old woman, Mrs Edeh Osinachi, for allegedly torturing her 17-year-old domestic worker by pressing a hot electric iron on her body in Awka, the state capital.
The police said the suspect was handed over to them on Wednesday by officials of the Anambra State Ministry of Education after school authorities raised alarm over the teenager’s severe injuries.
Confirming the arrest in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said teachers noticed the burns on the girl during a school session and immediately reported the matter, prompting further investigation.
“Preliminary findings revealed that the injuries were inflicted on the victim at home by her employer, who accused her of using a mobile phone without permission,” Ikenga said.
He added that the teenager alleged that Osinachi became enraged and punished her by pressing a heated electric iron against parts of her body, causing serious injuries.
“During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to the act,” the police spokesperson said.
The command commended the vigilance and swift intervention of the school authorities, noting that their action helped to prevent further harm to the minor.
Ikenga assured that the case would be thoroughly investigated and the suspect prosecuted in line with the law.
He also warned parents and guardians to exercise caution when placing children in the care of others, stressing that negligence often exposes minors to abuse.
The victim is currently receiving care while investigations continue.
