The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced that its Crude Distillation Unit and Motor Spirit production block are now operating at full nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, marking what it described as a historic milestone in global refining operations.
The management of the $20bn refinery disclosed that the two critical units have been fully restored and optimised following a scheduled maintenance exercise, paving the way for intensified production and improved supply to the domestic market.
According to the company, a 72-hour performance test run is currently underway in collaboration with its technology licensor, UOP, to validate operational efficiency and ensure that all critical parameters meet international standards.
Chief Executive Officer of the refinery, David Bird, said the successful stabilisation of the Crude Distillation Unit and the Motor Spirit Block demonstrated the facility’s advanced engineering capacity and strong operational resilience.
“Our teams have demonstrated exceptional precision and expertise in stabilising both the CDU and MS Block, and we are pleased to see them functioning at optimal efficiency. This performance testing phase enables us to validate the entire plant under real operating conditions,” Bird said.
He added that the refinery remained firmly on track to deliver consistent, world-class output, stressing that the milestone reinforced its position as Africa’s largest oil refining facility.
The Motor Spirit Block comprises the naphtha hydrotreater, isomerisation unit and reformer unit — key components in the production of Premium Motor Spirit.
Bird further disclosed that the refinery supplied between 45 million and 50 million litres of PMS daily during the recent festive season, despite undergoing maintenance.
With the restoration of the CDU and MS Block, he said the refinery is now positioned to increase domestic supply to as much as 75 million litres of PMS daily, depending on market demand.
The development is expected to further reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported petroleum products and strengthen energy security in the country.
“All remaining processing units will commence their respective performance test runs in Phase 2 next week,” Bird stated.
The refinery, located in the Lekki Free Zone, is projected to meet Nigeria’s total refined product demand and generate surplus for export, potentially positioning the country as a net exporter of petroleum products.
Bird reiterated the company’s commitment to delivering high-quality refined products while supporting industrial growth, job creation and economic diversification.
