.. Faces Three-Count Charge Under Cybercrimes Act, Communications Act
The Federal Government has filed criminal charges against former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over allegations that he unlawfully intercepted the telephone communications of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the charges were filed before the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday, February 16, 2026.
According to court documents sighted by our correspondent, El-Rufai is facing a three-count charge bordering on unlawful interception of communications, conspiracy, and acts deemed prejudicial to national security.
In Count One, the Federal Government alleged that the former governor admitted during a February 13 appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme that he and his associates intercepted the communications of the NSA, an offence said to be contrary to Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024.
Count Two accused him of knowingly associating with individuals involved in the unlawful interception without reporting them to relevant security agencies, contrary to Section 27(b) of the same Act.
In Count Three, the government alleged that El-Rufai used technical equipment or systems to compromise public safety and national security by intercepting the NSA’s communications, an offence punishable under Section 131(2) of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.
The charges were filed by counsel to the Department of State Services, including M.E. Ernest, O.M. Owan, U.M. Bulla, C.S. Eze and E.G. Orubor.
Although a date for his arraignment was yet to be formally announced as of press time, a hearing is expected in the coming days.
Efforts to obtain the reaction of El-Rufai’s media aides were unsuccessful on Monday night.
